As college-age kids prepare to head back to school, many will be packing up a mini fridge for their dorm room or apartment. But beware, some may not be safe. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 634,000 Frigidaire mini fridges are being recalled due to fire and burn hazards.

The mini fridges’ internal electrical components can short-circuit and ignite the surrounding plastic housing, posing fire and burn hazards.

Imported by Curtis International, the appliances feature the “Frigidaire” logo across the door. The model numbers of the affected units are EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, and EFMIS175, and a list of associated serial numbers can be found on the CPSC notice here. The model and serial numbers can be found on a label on the back of the mini fridges.

The mini fridges were sold in 6- and 9-can sizes (meaning they can hold 6 to 9 standard-size soda cans) in a variety of colors including black, blue, green, white, yellow, red, pink, and silver at Walmart and other stores nationwide as well as online on Walmart.com and Amazon.com from January 2020 through December 2023 for between $36 and $40.

So far, there have been at least 26 reports of the mini fridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and catching fire, with property damages totaling more than $700,000. Two consumers have also reported smoke inhalation injuries.

If you own one of the mini fridges, immediately unplug the unit, stop using it, and complete the online registration to receive a refund. A receipt is not required to participate in the recall or qualify for a refund. Consumers are being advised to cut the power cord and write “Recall” using a permanent marker on the front door of the unit and dispose of the recalled item in accordance with local and state regulations.
