Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory of Ann Arbor, Mich., is recalling some of its candy bars due to undeclared nut allergens, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall involves Zingerman’s Peanut Butter Crush Bars and the company's Cashew Cow Bars. The products were distributed to retailers in Michigan and New York. The packaging error that resulted in the undeclared nut allergens was caused by a "temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes," according to the company.

The following is the recalled product information printed on the packaging:

  • Peanut Butter Crush Bars, packaged in yellow and purple 2-ounce boxes, lot number 174250
  • Cashew Cow Bars, packaged in light blue and yellow 2-ounce boxes, lot number 174250

The Peanut Butter Crush candy bars may contain undeclared cashews, and the Cashew Cow bars may contain undeclared peanuts. The FDA warns that people who have an "allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews or peanuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products." No illnesses related to the recall have been reported to date.

According to the Mayo Clinic, an allergic response to peanuts usually occurs within minutes after exposure. Symptoms include hives, redness, or swelling; itching or tingling in or around the mouth and throat; diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting; shortness of breath or wheezing; runny nose; and throat tightness. Allergic reactions to tree nuts like cashews produce similar symptoms and can range from hives to anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing and can send the body into shock.

If you purchased either of these candy bars, return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions, contact Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory at 877-632-9264.
