Holiday Bark Recalled Ahead of Christmas Due to Life-Threatening Allergens

Check your holiday sweets stash. Popular Christmas chocolate treats sold at Aldi are being recalled due to undeclared allergens, according to a notice released by the grocery chain.

Silvestri Sweets Inc. of Geneva, Illinois, is recalling its Choceur-branded Pecan, Cranberry & Cinnamon Holiday Bark because it may contain an undeclared wheat allergen, and the Cookie Butter Holiday Bark due to a potential undeclared pecan allergen. ALDI immediately removed the products from its store shelves.

Both products were packaged in 5-ounce bags and sold in select stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The FDA reports that the Cookie Butter Holiday Bark has lot number 29225 and a best-by date of May 2026, both of which are printed on the back of the bag. The Pecan, Cranberry & Cinnamon Holiday Bark has lot number 29225 and a best-by date of August 2026. The undeclared allergens were the result of a packaging error.

No illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the recall, per the FDA. Those with a wheat allergy are likely to develop symptoms within minutes to hours after eating something containing wheat, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms include swelling, itching, or irritation of the mouth or throat; hives or an itchy rash; nasal congestion; headache; trouble breathing; cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.

An allergy to tree nuts, such as pecans, can cause similar symptoms, including hives, vomiting, or swelling, with some reactions being life-threatening, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Seek medical attention immediately if you start to experience any severe symptoms.
