Before you dig into a bowl of ice cream, check the label on the container. Publix is recalling its Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream because it may contain an undeclared egg allergen due to a packaging error, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The containers are labeled as Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream but may contain Rich & Creamy French Vanilla Ice Cream. Publix's vanilla ice cream does not contain eggs, while its French vanilla flavor does. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the product, the FDA warns.

According to the Mayo Clinic, egg allergy symptoms usually begin a few minutes to a few hours after consuming eggs or foods that contain eggs. Symptoms can include skin rashes, hives, a stuffy nose, upset stomach, and vomiting. Rarely, an egg allergy can cause a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis.

The recalled product was distributed to stores located in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida, but not to stores in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa, and Sarasota. Publix noted that locations in Virginia and North Carolina are not impacted. The half-gallon containers have a sell-by date of "June 19, 2026 A" and UPC 41415 03043.

No illnesses have been connected to the recall so far. If you purchased the ice cream, you can return it to your local store for a full refund. For additional questions, contact the Publix customer care department toll-free at 1-800-242-1227.
