Check your spice rack. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated its ongoing cinnamon alert with two additional products that were found to contain elevated levels of lead. Homeneeds Inc. of Bellevue, Wash., is recalling packets of Devi brand Cinnamon Powder (Dalchini Powder) due to potential lead contamination. The affected packages were sold at Apna Bazar in Washington from May 15 to October 21. The product of India is packaged in a clear plastic bag with a net weight of 100 grams, UPC 6 09595 11904 5, and batch number 2502315. Good Way Trading Group Inc. of Maspeth, N.Y., is recalling BaiLiFeng brand ground cinnamon products with UPC 4 897055 799401 and a best-by date of 11/12/2026. The FDA is currently tracking down the retail locations where the product was sold. The two brands were added to the FDA's growing list of recalled spice products, which dates back to March 2024. While no illnesses or adverse effects have been reported in connection with the affected products, prolonged exposure "may be unsafe" and "could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood," the FDA warns. High levels of exposure to lead in utero, infancy, and early childhood can lead to neurological effects such as learning disabilities, behavior difficulties, and lowered IQ. According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of lead poisoning in adults include high blood pressure, joint and muscle pain, difficulties with memory or concentration, headaches, abdominal pain, and mood disorders. Consumers who suspect they may have been exposed to lead or who experience symptoms after consuming any of the affected products should contact their health care provider. The FDA is advising consumers not to buy these ground cinnamon products, and if you purchased any of them, to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
