The recall was initiated after the company's testing revealed the presence of Listeria in the finished product and on the surfaces of the cutting equipment. Last month, Middlefield recalled more than 5,400 pounds of cheese products due to Listeria contamination. So far, no reports of illness have been filed related to either recall. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, adults aged 65 or older, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, and while infected pregnant women may experience mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery and stillbirths, the agency warns. If you purchased any of these recalled products, dispose of them or return them to the retail location for a refund.
