An ongoing cinnamon recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been updated to include an additional brand that was found to contain elevated levels of lead. Jiva Organics cinnamon powder, which is distributed by Spicy World of USA and sold at Taj Supermarket, has been added to the list of ground cinnamon products that contain elevated levels of lead found via product testing by state programs and confirmed by the FDA. The complete list of affected products can be found on the FDA's public health alert here. The affected product has a lot code AF-CINP/822 and a best-by date of July 2025. Exposure to any of these products may be unsafe, and the FDA is advising consumers to throw the products away and to stop buying them. Spices such as cinnamon have a long shelf life, so to be safe, check all of the items in your cabinet or pantry. If you think you've been exposed to elevated levels of lead, talk to your healthcare provider. Most people have no obvious immediate symptoms, and so far, no illnesses or adverse events have been reported in relation to this recall. But long-term exposure (i.e., months to years) to elevated levels of lead could contribute to adverse health effects, particularly for those who may already have elevated blood lead levels, according to the FDA.
