  • Christopher Ranch peeled garlic sold at Tops stores is being recalled due to a potential botulism risk caused by improper storage temperatures.
  • The product was kept in open-air coolers that did not stay within the required 32 to 37 degrees Fahrenheit range, creating conditions for dangerous bacteria growth.
  • The recall is classified as Class 1—the highest risk level—and consumers are urged to return the product for a refund and seek medical attention if symptoms appear.

Check your fridge. Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic is being recalled due to a potential botulism risk, according to an announcement from the Tops Friendly Markets supermarket chain.

The garlic, which was sold at Tops grocery stores in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, was packaged in 6-ounce containers with the UPC 00007457410852. All code dates of the product are affected.

It was stored in the retailer's "open air coolers," according to the grocery store notice, but the product should be kept at temperatures between 32 and 37 degrees Fahrenheit. The coolers do not reach those temperatures, which can lead to the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria.

The recall has been classified as Class 1, which is the most serious risk level. "Eating the food may cause health problems or even death," per the store notice.

Symptoms from botulism may include vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, muscle weakness, double vision, and difficulty swallowing and breathing, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

People with foodborne botulism typically experience symptoms 18 to 36 hours after eating the contaminated food or drink, but symptoms can occur as early as six hours or as late as 10 days after. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these signs after eating the recalled garlic.

If you purchased the peeled garlic from Tops, visit your local store with a "valid proof of purchase" in order to receive a refund.
