First and Last Bakery, LLC of Hartford, Connecticut, is recalling select tomato sauce products due to possible botulism risk, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The following products are included in the recall: First and Last Original Marinara Sauce, Tomato & BasilFirst and Last Original Traditional Pasta Sauce, Meat FlavoredFirst and Last Original Puttanesca Sauce, Mildly Hot & Spicy The sauces are packaged in 26-ounce jars with a use-by date of September 2026. The products were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through the Big Y supermarket chain, and potentially other retailers, from September 22 to October 28. They were "manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate," according to the FDA notice. Failure to properly process acidified or low-acid canned foods can lead to the formation of Clostridium botulinum. Per the FDA, botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and trouble speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation may also be common symptoms. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
