Don't Miss FDA Alert: Frozen Shrimp Contaminated With Radioactive Material—Here’s What to Know Massive Radioactive Shrimp Recall Expanded to More Stores and States—Here’s What to Know This recall is related to other recent recalls involving frozen shrimp products. The FDA is investigating Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination found in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by an Indonesian company, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Foods. The agency has determined that the products from the company violate the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act because they were prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions where they may have become contaminated with Cs-137. Exposure to Cs-137 through ingestion or inhalation allows the radioactive material to be distributed in the soft tissues, especially muscle tissue, potentially increasing a person's cancer risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). So far, no illnesses have been reported related to any of the recalls. If you purchased any of the affected shrimp, do not consume it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For any questions, contact Aquastar Corp at 1-800-331-3440, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. PST.
