  • Direct Source Seafood LLC is recalling about 83,800 bags of frozen raw shrimp sold under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brands due to possible contamination with cesium-137, a radioactive substance.
  • The FDA says the shrimp may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions that could have led to contamination with cesium-137, a man-made radioisotope.
  • Consumers who purchased the recalled shrimp are advised not to eat them and to return or dispose of the products for a full refund.

Check your freezer. Direct Source Seafood LLC of Bellevue, Washington, is recalling approximately 83,800 bags of its frozen raw shrimp, sold under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brand names, due to possible radioactive contamination, per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the FDA notice, the shrimp "may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with cesium-137 (Cs-137)."

So far, no illnesses have been reported. According to the FDA, Cs-137 is a man-made radioisotope of cesium. Traces of it are widespread, with higher levels found in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental contamination. Exposure to Cs-137 through ingestion or inhalation allows the radioactive material to be distributed in the soft tissues in the body, especially muscle tissue, potentially increasing a person's cancer risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

If you purchased any of the affected shrimp, do not eat them. Instead, dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions, please contact Direct Source Seafood LLC at 425-455-2291, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST.

This latest recall follows other warnings of shrimp sold at major retailers, which have been recalled due to potential radioactive contamination. The FDA is investigating Cesium-137 contamination found in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by the Indonesian company, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Foods.
