Utz Quality Foods of Hanover, Penn., has issued a recall of limited varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips because they may be contaminated with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The company was notified that a seasoning containing dry milk powder, sourced from California Dairies, Inc., and supplied by a third-party supplier, may contain salmonella. While the affected seasoning batches tested negative for the bacteria, out of an abundance of caution, Utz is recalling the potato chips. This is the same issue that triggered the recent Ghirardelli powdered beverage mixes recall.

The Utz recall involves the following products:

There have been no complaints of illness reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products, which were available at retail stores nationwide.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Healthy persons who are infected often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infections can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them and throw them away. For questions or refunds, contact the Utz Customer Care team at 1-877-423-0149, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT.
