Houseplants are an effective way to add life and greenery to your home. While finding the right variety for you depends on your home's conditions and your desired care level, there is one plant that is growing in popularity among houseplant enthusiasts. According to new data from The Sill, cacti are emerging as the "it" plant of 2025.

The houseplant supply company found that sales for cacti have skyrocketed (up 36 percent) year-over-year due to the availability of low-maintenance rare and unique varieties. Plus, cacti are visually appealing with fun architectural shapes that can serve as the perfect décor piece in your space.

The Sill found that plant lovers are interested in cacti because they can thrive with minimal attention, which is perfect for plant parents who are always on the go. Many varieties are also long-lasting, growing and thriving in your home for decades. For example, the old man cactus (Cephalocereus senilis), can live up to an impressive 200 years.

In general, cacti are very low-maintenance. But some varieties are easier to grow than others. If you love the look of a cactus but don't necessarily have a green thumb, bunny ears cactus (Opuntia microdasys) requires minimal attention and watering.

Other easy-to-take-care-of cacti are the Thanksgiving cactus and Christmas cactus. These plants bloom around the time of the holiday they're named after but can survive for decades if well looked after.
