  • Trader Joe’s shoppers could receive over $100 if they qualify for a settlement related to printed receipts.
  • The lawsuit claims Trader Joe’s receipts violated federal law by displaying 10 digits of card numbers, risking identity theft.
  • To qualify, you must have shopped at Trader Joe’s between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, and submit a claim by June 9.

Trader Joe's recently settled a class action lawsuit, agreeing to pay more than $7 million.

The lawsuit, which was filed in 2020, alleges that Trader Joe's violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by printing 10 digits of customers' credit and debit card numbers on its receipts—most credit cards have 16 digits.

The lawsuit claims that FACTA "requires persons that accept debit cards or credit cards at the point-of-sale to truncate certain card number information on printed receipts provided to consumers." The plaintiff alleges that the popular grocer put consumers at risk of potential identity theft by including 10-digit numbers on the receipts.

Trader Joe's has denied the allegations and "vigorously denies any and all liability or wrongdoing whatsoever," according to the settlement website.

The grocery store chain also stated that it is not aware of any reports of identity theft in connection with this matter, but it has agreed to pay $7.4 million to avoid further litigation.

If you shopped at Trader Joe's between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, and used a credit card or debit card, your receipt might have displayed the first six and last four digits of the card number you used, and you may be entitled to payment. The receipts did not include the cards' middle digits, expiration dates, customer names or addresses, or other personally identifiable information.

According to Trader Joe’s, not all of its "stores printed receipts displaying the first six and last four digits of the card number, and in those stores that did, only a small minority of transactions involved such receipts."

In order to be included in the settlement, you must submit a claim by June 9. The final payment amount will depend on the total number of valid claims submitted. Payments are currently estimated to be $102.45.

To file a claim, follow the instructions on the settlement website. You will need to submit a claim online through the website (if you received a claim ID and PIN) or by printing and mailing the claim forms. For questions, contact the toll-free settlement hotline at 1-888-444-7415.
