Martha’s classic cocktail sauce recipe is the best pairing for boiled shrimp or a grand seafood platter. Her no-cook condiment is made with just a handful of ingredients: fresh or prepared horseradish root, ketchup, lemon juice, and salt. Hot sauce is optional but recommended. The sauce is as quick to prepare as stirring the ingredients together, but does require some time in the refrigerator to allow the flavors to mingle—we suggest making it at least an hour before using. It's so good, no one will ever guess how simple it was to put together.

Directions

  1. Mix horseradish, lemon juice, and salt:

Stir together horseradish, lemon juice, and salt in a small bowl.

If using prepared horseradish rather than fresh, reduce the amount of lemon juice to 1 tablespoon.

  2. Add ketchup and hot sauce:

Stir in ketchup, and hot sauce if desired. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve

This cocktail sauce can be made up to a day ahead and refrigerated. Stir before using.
