Key Points

  • Kroger has recalled its Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad and Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, as announced by the FDA.
  • The salads were sold in the deli section and grab-n-go cases at 1,860 Kroger-owned stores across 28 states between late August and early October.
  • While no illnesses have been reported, Listeria poses serious health risks, especially to young children, older adults, and pregnant women. Customers should not eat the products and may return them for a full refund.

If you recently purchased prepared pasta salad from the deli section at the grocery store, you should check the label on the container. Kroger is recalling two of its popular offerings—Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad and Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad—due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The items were sold in Kroger Co. stores in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia.

They were sold from the deli department's full- and self-service cases at 1,860 Kroger-owned store locations, including Kroger, Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, Payless, Ralphs, and Smith’s.

Here's more detailed info on the recalled products:

  • Basil Pesto Bowtie Pasta Salad: From the deli service counter with UPC 217573-10000 and in grab-n-go packages with UPC 217573-20000; sold from September 6 through October 2.
  • Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad: From the deli service counter with UPC 227573-10000 and in grab-n-go packages with UPC 227573-10000; sold from August 29 through October 2.

Kroger has removed the recalled items from store shelves and has initiated a customer recall notification system that alerts customers who may have purchased the products through register receipt tape messages and email alerts.

Salad kit supplier Fresh Creative Foods initiated the recall because ingredients in the pasta salads manufactured by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, California may be contaminated with Listeria. This recall is connected to previous recalls at Trader Joe's and Walmart. The pre-cooked pasta found in those ready-to-eat meals was also supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods, according to the FDA.

So far, no reports of illness or injury have been reported in relation to the Kroger recall. According to the FDA, healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms from Listeria, but it can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, and may result in miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and gastrointestinal issues.

If you have purchased either of the recalled products, please do not consume them. Instead, return the salads to the store for a full refund or replacement. For questions, contact Kroger at 1-800-KROGERS, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. ET to 12 a.m. ET, and Saturday through Sunday, 8 a.m. ET to 9 p.m. ET.
