So far, no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recall. The FDA warns that salmonella can affect animals and that there is a risk to humans who handle the contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after coming into contact with the treats or any surfaces exposed to them.
Healthy people infected with salmonella can experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. If you're exhibiting any of these signs, contact your healthcare provider.
Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
According to the FDA notice, the company has ceased production and distribution of the recalled lot number as they investigate what caused the contamination. If you bought the recalled dog biscuits, do not feed them to your pets. Instead, return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
