Maine Firefighters Rescue Dog That Fell Through a Sheet of Ice—See the Video Here

Earlier this month, Maine first responders rescued a German Shepard that fell through a sheet of ice, bringing a happy conclusion to any pet owner's worst nightmare.

Gardiner Fire Chief Rick Sieberg said the Maine-based fire station received a call at about 10:10 a.m, reporting that a dog had fallen through ice on the Cobbossee Stream. When police officers and firefighters arrived to the scene, they found the dog in water about 50 to 60 feet offshore, according to ABC's WMTW 8.

Despite the frigid temperatures, firefighters Clayton Snelling and Josh Seekings put on ice suits and used a rescue sled to approach the German Shepherd. The two used paddles to break the ice covering the stream, allowing them to better reach the stuck canine. After a few minutes, the firefighters were able to lift the dog out of the water and place it safely on land.

The entire rescue mission was captured on video.

Sieberg told WMTW 8 that the German Shepherd was brought back to its home, where it was able to be dried off and warmed up. As far as the dog's wellbeing, the chief said it appeared to be completely fine and happy to be back on land when firefighters and police officers were leaving the scene.
