These Were the Top-Trending Dog Names of 2024

The American Kennel Club just released its annual list of the most popular dog names.

One of the most exciting aspects of welcoming a new dog into your home—beyond being the recipient of all their affection—is choosing a name. But deciding on the perfect name can be difficult. After all, you want to choose something that encapsulates their personality and appearance. To help new pet owners with this decision, The American Kennel Club (AKC) released a list of the most popular dog names of 2024.

The AKC, a non-profit organization, curated the list based on its registration statistics and AKC Canine Partners enrollments. The list features forever-favorite dog names, like Max and Bella, and more modern monikers like Stella, which rose from the 20th most popular spot in 2023 to eighth on this year's list.

The list of popular dog names has remained mostly the same as it was last year. Luna has claimed the top spot for girl dog names again. For boy names, however, Max was dethroned by Milo, which moved from fifth place to first. Teddy also climbed the list this year for boy names. It took the third spot, pushing Charlie and Cooper down to fourth and fifth, respectively.

"Dogs are an extraordinary and important part of our lives and choosing a pet’s name is a fun part of the process,” Gina DiNardo, AKC Executive Secretary said. “People put a great deal of thought into naming their dogs and often spend hours trying to pick the perfect name to fit their new pet.”
