Our golden latte is a nourishing, caffeine-free beverage made with aromatic ginger and turmeric, unsweetened almond milk, coconut oil, and a touch of honey. If you can get fresh turmeric, we recommend using it here as it will have a brighter flavor, but you can certainly used dried which is more convenient and readily available. Fresh ginger adds a spicy kick to the mixture—and unlike with the turmeric, we don't recommend swapping in the powdered version. Serve this golden latte frothy and warm or poured over ice for a refreshing morning drink or reviving afternoon sip.

Key Ingredients for Our Golden Latte

Turmeric: This knobby root lends a subtle, earthy flavor and stunning yellow hue to whatever it's added to. It contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties and can improve immune function. Buy it fresh if you can find it, or swap in the dried, powdered version instead.

Ginger: A one-inch piece of fresh ginger adds a spicy kick to this recipe. Use the edge of a spoon to peel off its skin, then slice it thinly. Before adding it to the pot, you'll also want to smash it, which you can do using the flat side of a chef's knife or a mortal and pestle. This helps to release more of ginger's flavorful oils, giving your golden latte a punchier flavor.

Almond milk: We prefer the flavor of unsweetened almond milk for the base of this beverage, but you can swap in another plant-based milk, such as oat, or even cow's milk with equally great results. Just be sure to use an unsweetened option to keep the finished drink from being too sugary.

Coconut oil: While it may seem unusual to add coconut oil to a hot beverage, doing so can help boost energy levels thanks to the fat's medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are quickly absorbed by body. Use virgin coconut oil for this recipe, which is less processed than the refined version, for maximum health benefits. (It also has a stronger coconut flavor, which is a delicious bonus.)

Honey: A small amount of honey adds just the right amount of sweetness. If your honey has crystallized, which is a natural occurrence, microwave it for 30 seconds to return it to a liquid state.

Freezing fresh ginger: If you have leftover ginger, you can stash it in the freezer for up to six months. Give it a good scrub and peel if desired, and store in an airtight container or resealable bag and freeze. When you need some, simply grate it right off the frozen root or use a sharp knife to slice off as much you need. You can also slice or grate it before freezing, if desired.

How to Make Homemade Almond Milk

Homemade almond milk takes this simple recipe to the next level. To make it:

  1. Soak 1 cup raw almonds overnight in a bowl of water in the refrigerator; drain.
  2. Add to a blender along with three cups of fresh water. Blend on high speed for one minute.
  3. Strain through a fine sieve lined with cheesecloth or a nut bag.

Homemade almond milk will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Remove from heat; strain and discard solids. Whisk while warm until frothy, or serve chilled over ice. Sprinkle with ground turmeric before serving.

How to Store Leftover Golden Latte

This recipe makes enough for two servings. If you're making it for yourself and have some leftover, you can store it in the fridge for up to five days (or make a double batch to have even more for later in the week). Reheat as much as you need at one time gently on the stovetop until it reaches a simmer or microwave it until hot, about one minute.

Variations

Milk: Swap out the almond milk for another plant-based milk like oat or coconut, or use cow's milk instead.

Sweetener: In place of honey, use another liquid sweetener like agave or maple syrup.

Flavoring: In addition to the turmeric, add a pinch of cayenne and black pepper for a spicy kick or some freshly grated nutmeg for a warmer flavor.
