Most Popular Pet Names of 2025 Revealed—Is Yours on the List?

Welcoming a new furry companion into your family involves a lot of prep, such as finding the right crate or litter box and pet-proofing your home. But perhaps one of the most important details is picking the perfect name.

To help spark inspiration for pet owners, TrustedHousesitters conducted a study of 100,000 dog and cat names registered on its site in July to reveal the most popular ones across the U.S. in 2025.

According to the findings, Luna is the most popular name of the year. Overall, the most common canine names are Luna, Bella, Lucy, Charlie, and Daisy, while the most popular cat names included some crossover, with Luna, Charlie, Lucy, Bella, and Leo sitting at the top. Classics like Annie, Murphy, Riley, Toby, Roxy, and Zoey dropped out of the top 50 this year.

TrustedHousesitters, which connects pet parents to verified sitters, also found that pet owners were heavily influenced by popular culture. The name Wednesday skyrocketed 1,400 percent, thanks to the hit Netflix series Wednesday. Harry Potter has also inspired names like Ginny, Dobby, and Neville for both cats and dogs, while The Fourth Wing book series by Rebecca Yarros has fueled a 318-percent increase in the name Violet and a 320-percent increase in the name Onyx.

The results revealed that residents of certain states are taking inspiration from their areas when naming their furry friends. For example, Aspen, Moose, and Rocky are popping in Colorado, and Biggie, Cannoli, and Brooklyn are making appearances around New York.
