"Whether it be a modern new build or a classic rancher, the paint colors make or break it every time—and warmth always wins," says Coco Silver, found and designer of Coco Home. "Choosing paint colors that are warm and inviting eliminates the need to compensate for the lack of depth in your walls with furniture and art alone." According to Silver, cool color palettes are much harder to work with, so avoid steel-toned blues, flat grays, and cool-toned whites. Instead, she votes for "muddy" blue hues, mushroom grays, and creamy whites. And no, you don't need a designated mud room or grand foyer for this easy DIY project—all you need is a front door. Shannon Askinasi, lead interior designer at Ash & Pine Interiors, says she likes to start by selecting a wallpaper that pulls in colors from the adjacent rooms to give your home a more cohesive feel. "If you prefer just one wallpapered accent wall, paint the rest of the space the color of the design’s background. Next, find an interesting console table, some ottomans or chairs, and decide between a fun mirror or artwork," she suggests. "These small DIY changes will make a huge impact and help you make a fabulous first impression on guests." 03 of 11 Create a Textural Focal Point Credit: Courtesy of Regan Billingsley Interiors Beyond paint, there are many wall treatments that can instantly elevate your space. "Textured wall panels, wood slats, solid surface materials, and metal panels add depth and a sleek, contemporary feel," suggests interior designer Regan Billingsley. Fabric wall décor is trending right now, and it's a great way to instantly infuse texture, warmth, and an inviting atmosphere. Billingsley says that if you're hesitant about committing to wallpaper, swap in something smaller like a tapestry, framed fabric, or macrame. "Painting a mural doesn't have to be as scary as it sounds," says interior designer Shauna Jones of Shauna Glenn Design. "In this example, the mural mimics wallpaper but at a fraction of the cost. It elevates the space by adding color and design to a large wall with minimal expense. If the idea of this intimidates you, pencil in the design before you dig in." This particular design is bright and joyful, but you can always use more muted tones. 05 of 11 Dream Up a Jewel Box Bathroom Credit: Jenifer McNeil Baker, Maestri Studio For a smaller project that delivers serious wow, consider taking an everyday powder room and transforming it into a jewel box bathroom. True to their name, these spaces often feel like walking into a glittering jewel box thanks to saturated color palettes, rich textures, beautiful patterns, and wow-worthy light fixtures. Start by choosing a color palette, and then work around it with paint, wallpaper, art, tile, and textiles. 20 Jewel Box Bathroom Ideas That Make This Small Space Feel Lavish 06 of 11 Install a Slat Feature Credit: Courtesy of Todd Goodman of LA Light Photo For an earthy, neutral feature that still feels fresh and modern, consider installing a slat wall. In this example, the designer installed a slat wall behind the bed, but Jones says you can easily do a similar feature in an entryway or family room. "Plus you get the added benefit of noise reduction anywhere they are installed," she adds. 07 of 11 Paint the Kitchen Cabinets Credit: Courtesy of Coco Home and So Gold Marketing A kitchen refresh can be beautiful and affordable—and it can be done in a weekend. The trick? A fresh coat of paint on your kitchen cabinets. "No need to tear out countertops or backsplashes that feel dated," says Silver. "Simply paint the cabinets, swap in fresh hardware, and finish it off with vibe-y light fixtures to really make the space pop." Askinasi agrees, adding that even if you repaint them the same color as before, it's a great way to breathe new life into the space. A well-loved kitchen can quickly look worn out. For another easy update, replace the cabinet pulls for something more modern. Unique, modern light fixtures balance the minimalism of the furniture and architectural elements, providing substance to the room and intriguing the eye. Interior designer Audrey Frances Doty says to choose a finish and silhouette that complements the current space so it doesn't feel out of place. "For example, a shiny chrome fixture will bring in cool hues and can create a modern glam style to the room, while a gold or brass fixture can bring warmth to a space, and a painted chandelier can become more of an art piece." She adds, "Don’t be afraid of out-of-the ordinary light fixtures, like sculptural fixtures with asymmetrical shapes. Sometimes, the most eclectic pieces can really transform a room into a modern haven." 09 of 11 Change Up Your Mirrors Credit: Courtesy of Audrey Frances Design A fun and easy way to modernize any bedroom or bathroom is by switching out your vanity mirror for a sculptural mirror. "I added this asymmetrical shaped mirror to my client’s powder room which instantly changed the whole style of the room and added a whimsical feel to it," Doty says. "The sculptural shape of the mirror can be a work of art in itself, adding an unexpected element and a touch of playfulness to your space." 10 of 11 Re-Imagine Your Small Décor Credit: Courtesy of Regan Billingsley Interiors This is your sign to audit existing knick-knacks, artwork, throw pillows, and other small décor. Donate pieces that feel dated or that no longer align with your current style, then make note of pieces that you'd like to swap in. (Thrift stores are a great place to start searching for fresh favorites.) "When we work with clients on styling, we often say that you can take six rooms with the same rug, sofa, and tables, yet create six completely different looks simply by changing the accessories," Billingsley says. "To refresh your space, start by stripping it down to the basics—remove all art, books, and decorative pieces. Then, thoughtfully put back only the items you truly love or have a personal connection to, experimenting with placing them in new spots." Next, layer in fresh accessories that bring inspiration and comfort, like a piece of art that resonates with you, a cozy new throw blanket, or an eye-catching coffee table book. This approach not only revitalizes the room's style and energy but can also leave you feeling personally refreshed and recharged. 11 of 11 Create a Reading Nook Credit: Tim Lenz; Barrett Oswald Designs Even if you're not a self-described bibliophile, there's a good chance your house could use a cozy space for kicking back with a good book, magazine, or digital reader. A classic reading nook is the perfect place to do all the above, and it's easier to create than you think. First, scout your home for a place that's perfect. Maybe it's a corner, a spare closet, an unused bedroom, or a sunny spot by a window. Next, add a comfy chair and a shelf or bookcase for your books. Some soft ambient lighting, a small table for books or a cup of tea, and cozy touches like a throw blanket and a few pillows can bring it all together. 22 Reading Nook Ideas for Turning Any Space Into a Cozy Escape Explore more: DIY Projects & Crafts DIY Home Projects
