If you know Milk Bar, then you probably know how outstandingly delicious all of its specialty desserts are. While you cannot go wrong with any of the bakery's sweet treats, one item stands out as especially iconic: the Cornflake Chocolate Chip Marshmallow Cookie. The dessert is so beloved that it even made an appearance on The decorvow Show.
In 2011, Martha invited Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi to make the recipe on an episode of the show. We had a chance to sit down with Tosi to learn all about her experience baking with Martha, sample some of the bakery's standout menu items, and find out what Martha-inspired dessert she would make.
"As a forever lifetime Martha fan, it was a dream come true," Tosi says when asked what it was like baking with Martha on her show. "The first time I ever baked on TV was with Martha," she adds. "She sets the standard—she sets the gold standard. She has taught me so much and has championed me in ways I am so grateful for. It was career-defining to bake with her for the first time."
Tosi and Martha baked one of Milk Bar's most iconic cookies together on the show. The treat combines a classic chocolate chip cookie with crunchy cornflakes and gooey marshmallows for the perfect balance of texture in every bite. It's especially delicious served warm and paired with the bakery's signature cereal milk soft serve. After just one bite, it was easy to understand why the cookie became such a beloved menu item and landed on Martha's show.
When asked about her favorite Milk Bar dessert, Tosi shared that it depends on the day, time, and her mood. "I am a two Cornflake Chocolate Chip Marshmallow Cookies warmed in the oven if I am having a bad day for breakfast. That I know will always soothe my soul," she says. "And late at night, I take a Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake Truffle, and I warm it in the microwave for 3 seconds. That is my 'go to bed tomorrow is gonna be awesome' feeling."
For Tosi, a Martha-inspired flavor would take the form of a peaches-and-cream layered cake made with classic shortbread, a crème fraîche layer, fresh peaches, and a thyme crumble on top. "It would look beautiful in her kitchen out on display," she says.
She also shared that one of the best lessons she has learned from Martha throughout her baking career is the importance of refinement. Paying attention to sharpness and fine details to create a focused vision and flawless execution is key. "Martha doesn't do anything a little bit of the way," Tosi says.
