Oatmeal is a nutritious, satisfying way to start the day, but cooking it can add extra time to a busy morning. While a warm bowl is often the go-to, having a few no-cook options on hand makes it easier to enjoy oats even when you're short on time.

When it comes to no-cook oatmeal recipes, it matters more which oats you're using. Rolled or quick oats work best for no-cook recipes, as they soften more easily and deliver a smoother texture. Steel-cut oats, on the other hand, can taste too rough and gritty when left uncooked, Lisa Moskovitz, a registered dietitian and founder of The NY Nutrition Group, warns. Flavored oatmeal may also come across as overly chalky or slightly off unless it is heated and mixed with milk or water, so stick with plain oats for the best results.

Blend Oats into Smoothies

Smoothies are an easy breakfast or snack option, and adding oats is a simple way to include complex carbohydrates, Emilie Symons, a chef-instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education, says.

There's no need to cook them first: Simply blend 1/4 cup of dry rolled or quick oats into your favorite smoothie. The dry oats have a very mild flavor, so you can keep the focus on fruit or make it feel more like a treat by blending the oats with banana, cocoa powder, dates, your milk of choice, and nut butter, she adds.

Enjoy an Oatmeal Bake

While an oatmeal bake skips the stovetop, it does require some time in the oven. The upside: You only need to make it once, and you will have breakfast ready for the week. To prepare it, combine rolled oats with your milk of choice, eggs, your preferred sweetener, oil or butter, and baking powder. Stir in any mix-ins—blueberries, almonds, or bananas work well—then bake, Symons says. "Now you have a tray of oatmeal for your whole week!"

Try Overnight Oats

Overnight oats have been a popular breakfast choice for good reason. This no-cook option is easy to prepare, endlessly customizable, and ready to eat after about four hours in the refrigerator, Moskovitz says.

"I like to add almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, or regular cow's milk, which is good too!" Symons says. "Then you can play around with your mix-ins: frozen blueberries, sliced banana, some chopped nuts, perhaps some grated apple and cinnamon, maybe some protein powder if you're going for more protein in the morning."

If you add protein powder, chia seeds, or flax seeds, you will need to add more liquid as these tend to absorb a lot, Symons notes.

Top Yogurt With Oats

Sprinkle oats over your yogurt bowl in the morning, and pair them with seeds, nuts, and fresh or dried fruit for an easy way to work them into your routine, Moskovitz says. The yogurt softens the uncooked oats, giving them a more pleasant texture and mellowing any chalkiness.

Make Granola Bars

Granola bars are a classic grab-and-go breakfast, but making them at home is even more flavorful and nutritious. "Homemade granola bars are my favorite way to meal prep oats and have them last for at least 3 to 4 days in the fridge in airtight containers," Moskovitz says.

Skip the oven and simply combine oats with nut butter, honey, and your favorite mix-ins. Press the mixture into a parchment paper-lined, freezer-safe pan or container, let it chill until set, then cut it into rectangles or squares for serving. The result is a perfectly chewy, no-cook breakfast that makes it easy to enjoy your daily oats for the whole week.
