As you plan out your upcoming travels for the spring and summer, consider including a stop at a botanical garden on your must-see list.

Earlier this month, USA Today released the results of its annual 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, announcing the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden as the best botanical garden in the country. The gardens were nominated by an expert panel and voted on by readers.

In addition to its menagerie of animals, including famous Fiona the hippo, the popular attraction in Cincinnati, Ohio, features gardens dotted throughout the property, integrated into the animals' habitats. For example, near the Elephant Trek habitat, you'll find the Asian Waterfall Garden, which includes plants such as large elephant ears, tropical bananas, and Chinese fan palms that are native to Southeast Asia.

In spring, a massive 100,000-bulb tulip display blooms. Dubbed “Tulip Mania,” the garden's annual flower festival, known as Zoo Blooms, also features more than one million daffodils, hyacinths, flowering trees, shrubs, and other spring bulbs in a vibrant range of colors.

With a focus on conservation and education, there's also a garden dedicated to propagating and preserving endangered plants, another with a number of plants that are popular with pollinators, and an area with perennials and annuals that attract butterflies.

Don't live close enough to make a trip to Cincinnati? Then visit one of the many other beautiful botanical gardens around the country. Rounding out the top five best botanical gardens in the U.S. according to USA Today are Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha, Nebraska; Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis; and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
