As its name suggests, vodka lemonade is a refreshing combination of vodka and lemonade—and it’s so much better when the lemonade is homemade. For our sophisticated, but easy version, we make a simple syrup infused with fresh thyme to sweeten lemon juice, then combine and chill the lemonade.

When your drink has just a few ingredients, it’s important to use top-quality vodka—you’ll notice the difference. You can add the vodka to the pitcher of lemonade or keep the lemonade virgin and add vodka to each iced-filled glass before topping with the lemonade. Whichever route you take, this citrusy cocktail is a sweet-tart sip for summer entertaining.

  1. Make thyme-simple syrup:

In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups water with the sugar and thyme; bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; let cool to room temperature.

  2. Strain and chill simple syrup:

Pour mixture through a fine sieve into a large glass measuring cup; discard thyme. You should have 2 cups syrup. Cover with plastic; chill.

  3. Combine ingredients and serve:

In a large serving pitcher, stir together lemon juice, vodka, and chilled syrup; garnish with thyme. Divide evenly among eight tumblers filled with ice and serve.
