How to Make Speckled Easter Eggs

This craft is equally stunning and fun to make—and comes together with basic pantry ingredients and a seamless, mess-free technique.

Materials

  • Paper cups
  • Dried grains, beans, or nuts
  • Liquid food dye
  • White vinegar (optional)
  • Hard-cooked eggs, plain or dyed
  • Egg-drying pin board

Follow these steps to make unique, festive eggs. If you want to tuck them into a handmade Easter basket, arrange them with similarly speckled treats for a unified look.

  1. Fill each cup about 1/4 full of grains, beans, or nuts and then add 10 to 15 drops of food dye.
  2. Swirl each until dye coats contents; the mixture should be damp but not soaked. If mixture dries, add 1 drop of vinegar or a little more dye.
  3. Add an egg and gently shake and swirl the cup to create stunning speckles. Repeat with more eggs and colors and let eggs dry on a pinboard.
