The Birds (1963)
No spooky season is complete until you watch an Alfred Hitchcock film, and The Birds is one of his most iconic. This 1963 movie follows a San Francisco socialite who pursues a potential love interest to Bodega Bay, a small Northern California town. Things take a turn for the worst when the townspeople experience sudden, violent bird attacks.
Misery (1990)
Based on Stephen King's 1987 novel, Misery follows famed novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his biggest fan, Annie Wilkes. But when she learns Sheldon kills off her favorite character in his upcoming book, she holds him captive and insists he write a new version solely for her. This heart-pounding thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Poltergeist (1982)
From the mind of Steven Spielberg, Poltergeist focuses on a suburban family whose home becomes the center of paranormal activity. The playful ghosts turn sinister when the family's youngest daughter, Carol Anne, is abducted, and her parents and siblings must fight to get her back.
Frankenstein (1931)
This timeless film has been adapted multiple times, but we recommend watching the 1931 version. It stars Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein, a scientist who is obsessed with exhuming corpses to assemble the parts into a living being.
The Shining (1980)
One of the most famous horror films of all time, The Shining was directed by Academy Award winner Stanley Kubrick and is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same title. The film focuses on Jack Torrance, an aspiring novelist who takes a job as a winter caretaker for an isolated hotel. Torrance is slowly driven to insanity by an evil presence within the hotel. At the same time, his clairvoyant son experiences terrifying premonitions.
Jaws (1975)
With summer beach days in the rearview, now is the best time to revisit this 1975 cult classic. Jaws follows a police chief, a marine biologist, and a professional shark hunter who search the waters for a great white shark wreaking havoc on beachgoers in a New England town.Â
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
If science fiction is your go-to genre, add this psychological horror film to your list. It involves a San Francisco health inspector and his co-worker who learn that the townspeople are being replaced by aliens who are visually identical to the humans they are portraying. The only difference? The duplicates lack humanity.
Silence of the Lambs (1991)
This Academy Award-winning film follows a young F.B.I. agent who seeks the help of incarcerated killer Hannibal Lecter as she attempts to catch another murderer who skins his victims. After you're done watching this one, its sequel, Hannibal, will leave you just as chilled.
The Others (2001)
One of the more modern films on this list, The Others focuses on a mother who takes care of her two sick children in a secluded mansion. A series of haunting events convinces the mother that her home is infested with ghosts. The plot twist will leave your jaw on the ground.
Dracula (1931)
The first sound film adaptation of the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula was released in 1931 and portrays Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula who takes up residence in London, where he terrorizes his victims by night.
Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)
This beloved 1954 science fiction film centers on a prehistoric creature that inhabits the waters of the Amazon. A group of scientists captures the beast and brings it aboard their ship. One night, the creature escapes its cage and kidnaps one of the scientist's lab assistants, whisking her away to its lair.Â

One of the most popular Halloween movies of all time, this 1978 film still holds its power to scare viewers—no matter how many times you've seen it. Halloween follows an escaped killer who returns to his hometown to continue his killing spree.
