8 Ways to Make Outdated Wood Cabinets Look More Modern Don't let natural wood cabinets date your kitchen. Close Credit: hikesterson / GETTY IMAGES Natural wood cabinets were popular for decades before falling out of favor as all-white kitchens became desirable due to minimalist design trends. But replacing outdated wood cabinetry is an expensive and costly project that not everyone has the time or budget for. Luckily, there are many ways to refresh wood cabinets without ripping them out. Whether it's a small change, like updating your hardware, or something bigger, like replacing your countertops, interior designers say these are their go-to ways to make wood cabinets look more modern. "Oversized bar pulls in matte black, brushed brass, or mixed-metal finishes bring a contemporary edge," says Kerrie Kelly, creative director of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab. "For a designer-forward touch, consider textured or knurled details, which add subtle sophistication." She also recommends dressing up open shelving with a gallery railing for a more finished look. "Clear glass feels airy, while reeded or frosted glass adds texture and privacy," she says. However, if you do go this route, be prepared to keep the contents inside your cabinets well organized. "Glass fronts highlight styling as much as storage," Bogart notes. Paint Them Credit: Chris Mottalini If you really don't like the look of the wood, paint is your best bet. "A fresh coat of paint can completely transform wood cabinetry," says Bogart. "Lighter tones like soft whites, warm grays, or muted greens feel fresh and modern, while a deep navy or charcoal can create bold sophistication." She recommends using a satin or semi-gloss finish for durability and a clean look. Keep in mind that proper prep work is essential when painting cabinets. "Sanding, priming, and using a high-quality paint designed for cabinetry ensures the finish feels elevated and lasts," says Kelly. This can be a time-consuming project, but the finished product will completely transform your kitchen. Update Your Tile Credit: Mosaik Design Even the most traditional wood cabinets look modern when paired with fresh tile, notes Bogart. Swap outdated backsplashes for large-format slabs, stacked subway tile, or geometric patterns to bring your kitchen into the current decade. Kelly agrees: "Think of tile as the supporting actor that allows the cabinetry to shine." Bogart recommends choosing a grout color that blends, not contrasts, to maintain a streamlined look. Stain Them Credit: alvarez / Getty Images Breathe new life into dated wood cabinets by staining them, which modernizes the grain without covering it up like paint does. "Warmer, mid-tone stains or darker espresso finishes feel more modern than orange or red undertones," says Kelly. She adds that cerused or natural matte finishes highlight wood grain while keeping it fresh and organic. If you do opt for stain, Roz Murphy of Roz Murphy Design recommends testing a few samples in different lighting, as natural wood undertones can shift dramatically once stained. "Instead of ornate profiles, I recommend clean, architectural trim that frames cabinetry or adds subtle height to upper cabinets," says Kelly. "It creates a tailored, built-in look that feels intentional and high-end." Another option is to add warmth through brass molding. "Adding brass accent trim can be a beautiful way to elevate your cabinets and give them a custom, designer look," says Murphy. "It’s a wonderful way to blend warmth with a bit of modern glamour." If you add glass fronts, Bogart recommends installing interior lighting to make the cabinetry feel fresh and functional. "Pairing wood cabinetry with sleek quartz or natural stone can redefine the entire kitchen’s mood," says Bogart. Explore more: Home Home Design & Decor Kitchen Design Ideas
