Summer mornings before the heat sets in are one of the most underrated windows for entertaining. Plus, what better way to start the day than with loved ones, mimosas, and still-warm pastries?Â
“This theme lends itself naturally to smaller groups and genuine conversation in a way that evening parties rarely do,” says event planner Callista Osborn, founder of Callista and Company. “Think florals in full bloom, a table layered with color and texture, a farm-to-table menu, and a generous beverage station. It's cheerful by nature, and it almost styles itself.”Â
She suggests self-service mimosa or bloody Mary stations, which are low-lift crowd pleasers that provide some fun photo ops. For the table, lean into the season. Overflowing fruit, pastries, local jams, and whipped butter create a lavish, but still approachable, spread.
Grand Slam
Three out of the four major grand slams happen during the summer, including the French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open. Mallory Killingstad, event specialist and co-founder of Pavilion Paper, says there are a million ways to have fun with a tennis “grand slam” theme. Â
“Create fun tennis ball centerpieces, and use cocktail picks with tennis balls on the end for beverages,” she suggests. “If you have a grassy backyard, cut your grass extra short and then use white ground-up chalk to create a faux tennis court. You can even put a badminton net up in the middle and let your guests swing a racket around while sipping on mint juleps.” For the U.S. Open, she recommends serving honey deuces.Â
Golden-Hour Picnic Dinner

The summer picnic is an icon for a reason, and it makes for the best summer party theme, whether you’re hosting at home or at a nearby park. "A picnic dinner feels special but still low-key, which makes it perfect for this time of year," says Cathy O'Connell, co-founder and creative director of COJ Events. "Use blankets, baskets, and portable foods that are easy to serve and eat. And a few candles or string lights make it feel finished."
To really lean into the theme, opt for a classic gingham pattern spread or blanket, a woven basket or two, and don’t hold back on the mason jars. Ice-cold lemonade and lawn games—like horseshoes or cornhole—bring it all together.
Sweets Under the Stars

Warm summer nights and stargazing just go together—and you can build an entire theme around it very easily. Osborn says to start right around sunset, so guests arrive during the golden hour and can naturally settle in as the light fades and the stars begin to twinkle.Â
“Lay out blankets and floor cushions; the less formal the seating, the more relaxed the energy,” she adds. “Consider a pajama and slippers dress code to encourage guests to get cozy, and keep overhead lighting to a minimum, and instead dot the space with lanterns along walkways and at any food or drink stations.”Â
For a detail guests will cherish, print stargazing maps as a helpful reference that doubles as a thoughtful party favor. And if you really want to commit to the theme, consider reaching out to a local astronomer or astronomy club who can bring along a professional telescope. Â
Retro Games
A retro game theme is a great summer party idea, whether you’re looking for an excuse to keep cool indoors or enjoying some beautiful al fresco weather when the temperatures are agreeable. Mahjong is a prime example of this, Killingstad says, and other ideas include checkers, chess, dominoes, and cribbage (just to name a few).
Print and frame the rules for each table, serve summer bites that are easy to eat while playing, and offer a fun menu of drinks that lean into the theme—like “Lucky Bamboo” mojitos or a “Double Domino” espresso martini.
Outdoor Movie Night

Outdoor movie nights are the epitome of summer fun. They’re low-key, super nostalgic, and easily adaptable to your crew’s preferences. Start by picking a film that fits the season and your guests, like a crowd-pleasing summer blockbuster, a cult classic, or a vintage thriller. Then move on to seating.
“Create a lounge-worthy setup with a mix of blankets, floor cushions, and low chairs so guests can settle in however they are most comfortable,” Osborn advises. “Set up a self-serve snack station so everyone can help themselves throughout the night, without interrupting the film.”Â
Make sure to stock the station with classic movie snacks, like popcorn in individual bags, a candy display, and both classic and spiked soft drinks.
Classic Ice Cream Social
No doubt you’ll get an influx of affirmative RSVPs when hosting an ice cream social. Best of all, this is a simple party idea that you can really make your own. “An ice cream social is inherently low-pressure and high-delight, making it a perfect fit for an informal summer afternoon,” Osborn says. “The heart of the party is, of course, the ice cream, so consider hiring a cart from a local creamery, design a self-serve sundae bar, or encourage each guest to bring their own favorite pint to share.”
Consider incorporating informal games, such as a blind taste test, a guest vote on their favorite flavor, or an ice cream-making competition. For the latter, Osborn says to set up one or two countertop ice cream makers with a vanilla or cream base already prepared, and let guests customize from there with mix-ins.Â
