The first of three supermoons to close out 2025 will rise in the night sky soon. This month's full moon will occur at 11:48 p.m. EDT on October 6, but will appear full the day before and the day after. What makes this moon so special is that it is considered a supermoon, which is when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, referred to as perigee. This causes it to look bigger and brighter than a normal full moon. It is called the "Harvest Moon" because it is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox, which occurred on September 22. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, this full moon rises around the same time for several nights, providing extended evening illumination. This extra light helped farmers complete their harvests before fall frosts, hence the moniker.
