We put so much time and care into creating a welcoming home for ourselves; it only makes sense to extend the same courtesy to our furry friends. Giving your pup their very own doghouse is the perfect way to do just that—and you can get creative with the design process.
Whether it's a log cabin-style doghouse or one that blends in with your living room, there are plenty of stylish doghouses that are sure to make both you and your pup happy. Ready to be inspired? These canine residences take barkitecture to the next level.
Build a Brick Abode

Exterior doghouses run the risk of wearing down over time, but brick will go the distance. This sweet doghouse design is simple enough, but thoughtful details like an arched entrance and shingled roof give it a homey touch.
Add a Shingle Roof

This doghouse, designed by Lori Andriot of Bittners, is tucked into a niche near the laundry room. It's brought to life with a cedar shake roof. A storage area above the bed provides ample space for stashing treats and dog food.
Color Match It

Placed underneath the desk, this doghouse blends perfectly with the rest of the room.
"Instead of using a basic store-bought crate, I hired our cabinetmaker to build a custom wooden [one], and had it painted to match the surrounding built-ins," says Mimi Meacham, founder of Marian Louise Design.
Opt for a Log Cabin

For another fun twist on an outdoor doghouse, build a mini log cabin. Use real wood for a high-quality, beautiful finish that will endure, and consider adding details like a front porch or a shingled roof for an ultra-cozy look.
"Make sure to use wood over plastic or composite materials," says Sally Grottini, dog behavior expert with JustAnswer. "Cedar wood is best, and make sure [it's] untreated."
Convert an Unused Fireplace

You can also convert a nonfunctional fireplace into a doggy sanctuary.
"Since the old living room fireplace at my home was unused, I repurposed it into a snug little marble palace," says designer and artist Sebastian Errazuriz. "Anita loved that it felt protected, but had a great view of the entrance—and she could monitor anyone coming in and out."
Utilize a Built-In Nook
Daley Home
A little nook or built-in console can be transformed into a cozy doghouse, like in this space by Shelby Van Daley of Daley Home. The doors can be left open as needed, or closed up when you need to crate your pup while away
Customize Your Mudroom

The mudroom is the landing pad for everyone who enters your home, including your canine friend. In this example, a customized built-in adds a cozy doghouse on the lower half. Slate-blue paint on shaker-style cabinetry and brass hardware add a thoughtful touch.

There are so many ways to maximize your under-the-stairs space—like building your furry friend an elegant abode. Even simple design details—such as wallpaper, a cozy bed, or a nearby shelf—can make the space feel more intentional.
Mimic Traditional Architecture

Some outdoor doghouses can turn into an eyesore—to counteract this, you can always add more whimsy and style to their design. This one, for example, takes inspiration from traditional architecture, complete with its own covered front porch. The yellow exterior, with its contrasting roof and trim, gives it a cheery touch.
