Michaels Just Made a Major Announcement—and It's Good News for Crafting Enthusiasts

Michaels announced that it's expanding its fabric, sewing, and yarn assortment, adding over 600 products across new and existing brands, including sewing and quilting supplies, fabric, yarn, specialty threads, sewing machines, and more.

Plus, the retailer has acquired the intellectual property and private label brands of Joann, including the development of the Big Twist brands. The Michaels website has a dedicated page featuring the latest updates and product selection from Joann, which began closing its stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2025.

With hobbies like sewing and knitting experiencing a resurgence, this product expansion from Michaels offers more options for creators, whether they're experienced or novices.

For example, searches for "fabric" on Michaels.com have jumped by 77 percent over the past year. To meet the growing demand, the retail chain is increasing its assortment—which ranges from cotton for quilting to broadcloth for apparel and home décor—across more than 680 stores, with plans to expand the assortment in an additional 280 stores.

For sewing enthusiasts, Michaels is now lining its shelves with more tools and materials, including new Brother and Singer sewing machines and over 50 new needle crafting kits. Stores will also feature new products from Clover, Fiskars, Coats & Clark, and Pellon, such as stabilizers, interfacing, specialty scissors, and thread packs.

With knitting, crocheting, and other fiber arts gaining popularity, Michaels is growing its yarn assortment by 25 percent to fit the needs of skilled crocheters and newbie knitters. The stores will be stocked with over 60 new Loops & Threads offerings; more items from Red Heart, Bernat, and Lion Brand; a bigger selection of cute amigurumi kits; and Joann brands, including Big Twist Value Plus, Big Twist Twinkle, Big Twist Posh, and Big Twist Baby Bear.
