These Are the Most Popular Thanksgiving Pies in the US

As home cooks across the country start their Thanksgiving prep, one big question remains: what's for dessert?

In its 2025 Holiday Report, Instacart reveals what’s popping up on holiday tables across America this year. And of course, pie is a big piece of the Thanksgiving feast. From traditional pumpkin to sticky-sweet pecan, hosts are serving up the classic dessert—whether it's store-bought or homemade.

Using purchasing data from 2024, Instacart was able to offer a slice-by-slice look at which pies reigned supreme during last year's Thanksgiving week, as well as pie shopping trends and the most popular pie in each state.

The day before Thanksgiving saw a huge surge in pie orders across the country, Instacart reports. Not surprisingly, pumpkin came out on top, followed by apple and pecan. Sweet potato and cherry rounded out the top five. Berry pie and decadent picks like peanut butter also made strong showings in the top 10.

According to Instacart's data, sweet potato, pumpkin, and pecan pie saw the most dramatic surges in sales, with sweet potato experiencing a whopping 2,691 percent increase in comparison to the yearly average. Apple rose more gradually throughout the fall, and cherry saw a small but sweet uptick around Thanksgiving.

While pumpkin pie was number one nationwide, Instacart found that each state had its own unique pie preferences. For example, out west in states like California, Oregon, and Washington, pumpkin was king, but in the South, pecan was popular in Texas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, while sweet potato was a favorite in Georgia, Maryland, and North Carolina.

French silk pie stood out across Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. And as for the Northeast, cream pies were big in Maine and Massachusetts. Meanwhile, peanut butter pie rose to the top in Pennsylvania, with a 139 percent greater order share than the national average.
