  • Linen sheets are a luxurious, breathable option that becomes softer and more comfortable with proper care over time.
  • Wash linen sheets gently in cold or lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and avoid overloading the washer.
  • Air drying is best to prevent shrinkage, but combining it with a low-heat dryer cycle minimizes wrinkles.

Linen sheets have become very popular, especially during the warmer seasons, due to their effortlessly chic, lightweight, and relaxed appearance. However, caring for them is not as low-maintenance as typical cotton sheets. Since linen is a natural fiber made from flax, it needs gentle washing to maintain its softness and durability. The right care routine keeps linen sheets soft, strong, and long-lasting.

The key to washing linen sheets is to follow the care instructions listed on the label; doing so consistently can even improve their quality over time. We consulted laundry experts to share the best care routine. Below, they share their expert-approved step-by-step instructions for washing linen sheets, drying them, and treating stains.

Why Linen Sheets Need Extra Care

Unlike standard cotton sheets, linen sheets require a bit more care to maintain their quality. Made from flax, linen is a natural fiber with a looser weave, which makes it more breathable but also more delicate. Still, many find the extra effort worthwhile—linen sheets are known for their airy feel and for becoming softer and more comfortable over time.

Without proper care, however, linen can wrinkle easily, feel stiff, and become prone to pilling, says Sammy Wang, a laundry scientist at P&G Fabric Care. Taking a gentler, more intentional approach to washing and drying helps preserve the fabric's texture and extend the life of your sheets.

How to Wash Linen Sheets

Step 1: Prepare the Sheets for Washing

Before washing your sheets, take a few simple prep steps to ensure the best results. Start by checking the care label and following any specific instructions, Wang says.

Next, shake out the sheets to prevent bunching, and place them loosely in the washer. Wash them with similar colors, and avoid mixing them with heavy items—such as jeans or garments with zippers—which can cause wear, says Wang and Heather Asker, merchandising and marketing manager at Bella Notte Linens.

Step 2: Add Detergent

Use a mild, gentle detergent when washing linen sheets, as harsh detergents and chemicals can damage the fibers, says Anthony Sullivan, a spokesperson for OxiClean.

Adding fabric softener is optional, but it can help reduce stiffness and protect natural fibers, Wang says.

Step 3: Select the Right Settings

Once the detergent is in the washer, choose settings that help preserve the fabric. Sullivan says to wash linen sheets in cold or lukewarm water on a short, gentle cycle.

Wang also recommends selecting a low spin cycle to help prevent deep wrinkles from setting in. If the care label lists specific washing and setting instructions, always follow those guidelines first.

Step 4: Avoid Overloading the Machine

Before starting the wash, make sure the load is small and loosely packed. This helps prevent wrinkling and allows the sheets to be cleaned thoroughly, Sullivan and Wang say. Once everything is set, you can start the load.

How to Dry Linen Sheets the Right Way

Air-drying linen sheets is the gentlest option. It helps prevent shrinkage and keeps fibers relaxed, though the fabric may feel slightly stiff once it's dry, Sullivan says.

If the care label allows and you prefer to use a dryer, select a low-heat or delicate setting, Wang says. Avoid over-drying, as it can cause shrinkage and leave linen feeling coarse over time.

For the best results, combine both methods. Remove the sheets from the dryer while they're still slightly damp to minimize wrinkles. If air drying leaves them feeling stiff, run a short air-fluff cycle to soften the fabric, and always remove the sheets promptly to reduce wrinkles.

How Often You Should Wash Linen Sheets

"We recommend laundering sheets as often as weekly to keep textile fibers clean and well-conditioned," says Asker. However, the general rule is to wash them every one to two weeks to keep them clean and comfortable.

You may need to wash them more often if you sweat heavily, live in a hot or humid climate, or share your bed with pets some nights, Wang adds.

During warmer climates and seasons, Asker suggests washing linen pillowcases every three to four sleeps, too.

How to Treat Stains on Linen Sheets

When it comes to treating stains on linen sheets, treat them as soon as you notice them to prevent them from setting, experts warn. Gently blot the area—never rub—to protect the fibers from potential damage over time.

Rinse the area with cold water, then apply a mild detergent or stain remover, and let it sit for at least 20 to 30 minutes, or longer if needed, before washing the sheets, Wang and Asker say.

Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Linen Sheets

Washing linen sheets is simple, but it requires attention to detail to prevent damage or shrinkage. The most common mistakes are also the easiest to avoid—focus on using the right washer and dryer settings, and stick to a mild, gentle detergent.

Wang says frequent missteps include using hot water, overloading the washer, or selecting a high spin cycle. Sullivan adds that harsh detergents and high heat can weaken fibers and lead to shrinkage. In the dryer, avoid over-drying or leaving sheets sitting too long, as this can cause stiffness and wrinkles.

When treating stains, gently blot the area to avoid damaging the fibers over time.
