The Cleaning Tasks You Only Need to Do Once a Year, According to Pros

Not everything needs constant upkeep.

It’s easy to focus on day-to-day cleaning tasks (think: loading your dishwasher or a quick sweep of the kitchen floor), but some of the most important upkeep happens with more purposeful refreshes. By tackling these often-overlooked tasks annually, you can keep your home running efficiently in the long run.

We chatted with two cleaning professionals who shared the areas of your home that only need attention once a year.

Washing Curtains and Drapes

You likely already dust or lint-roll your curtains as part of your weekly routine, but a full wash is something most people overlook. According to Autumn Ryan, a cleaning expert and founder of The SoRite Company, this task only needs to be done once a year or so to make a meaningful difference.

“Although many people will occasionally dust them, the process of washing them is generally a once-a-year job,” Ryan says. “After the fact, however, the difference in the cleanliness of the air in the room and the overall odor is very noticeable.”

Over time, curtains and drapes tend to absorb dust, allergens, pet dander, and cooking odors. Giving them a proper wash (following the care tag, of course) helps refresh the entire space, leaving the air cleaner and the room feeling noticeably lighter.

Exterior Window Cleaning

While interior glass may get regular attention, exterior windows (and the surrounding details) are best handled once per year. Isabella Flores, a cleaning professional at Sparkly Maid San Diego, recommends scheduling a professional cleaning, especially for second-story windows, for both safety and a streak-free finish. “Cleaning the exterior of windows will make a greater visual impact than most people expect,” she says.

Don’t stop at the glass, though, our experts say. Window tracks, frames, and surrounding seals collect dirt and debris that can affect both appearance and function. Cleaning these areas yearly keeps windows looking polished and helps them open smoothly.

Professional Carpet Cleaning

Even with regular vacuuming, carpets and upholstery hold onto more grime than meets the eye. That’s why both of our experts recommend bringing in a professional cleaner once a year. “Professional carpet cleaning is essential for maintaining the appearance of the carpet and extending its lifespan,” says Flores. “Vacuuming will not remove the deep-seated soil, allergens, and bacteria that accumulate over time.”

For best results, Flores suggests scheduling this service at the end of summer, when carpets have endured the most foot traffic.

Cleaning Behind and Beneath Large Appliances

Out of sight often means out of mind—especially when it comes to the spaces behind your refrigerator, stove, and washing machine. According to Flores, these spots are among the most commonly neglected. “These areas collect significant amounts of dust, food debris, and grease,” Flores says. “Taking the time to pull the appliances out and give them a good cleaning once a year will remove odor-causing substances, improve performance, and help eliminate a real fire hazard.”

Ryan notes that this task also offers an opportunity to catch potential issues early on. While you’re clearing away debris, you’re able to spot leaks, loose connections, or signs of wear that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Mattress Refresh

Your mattress plays a major role in your comfort and sleep quality, yet it’s often forgotten in cleaning routines. A simple refresh can make a noticeable difference. “Mattress vacuuming, spot-cleaning stains, and rotating the mattress once a year will extend its life and remove dust mites and debris,” says Flores.

Ryan recommends finishing the task by lightly spraying the surface with a fabric-safe sanitizer to help break down buildup you can’t see (but can probably still feel). This keeps your sleeping environment fresher and more supportive over time.

Dryer Vent Maintenance

Some cleaning tasks go beyond aesthetics—and this is one of them. Maintaining your dryer vent is essential for both efficiency and safety. “A thorough cleaning improves efficiency, but it also reduces fire risk,” says Ryan. “It’s a simple task that carries real safety value.” Ryan suggests pairing this with basic HVAC upkeep—like wiping down vents and replacing filters—to improve air quality and reduce strain on your system.

“The standard among professionals is to address these tasks on a scheduled basis and not in response to visible evidence,” Flores adds. By building these annual tasks into your routine, you’ll keep your home running more smoothly and avoid bigger problems down the line.
