While caring for bed sheets is (usually) a straightforward task that seamlessly fits within your weekly routine, how to wash and care for a duvet cover is typically not as clear. Over- or improper washing habits can decrease its lifespan, and they're more cumbersome to prep and fold.

We’re here to set the record straight on the proper method and frequency for cleaning your duvet cover. With tips from cleaning professionals and laundry experts, here's how to wash a duvet cover—and what common mistakes to avoid.

How Often Wash to Your Duvet Cover

Scott Schrader, cleaning expert at CottageCare, recommends washing your duvet cover every one to two weeks, depending on the season.

In the summer, Schrader suggests upping the cleaning frequency to weekly to account for the warm weather and sleeping with fewer layers between you and the duvet. For colder months, every two weeks is generally sufficient (unless you sweat a lot at night).

Wondering how often you should be laundering your actual duvet or comforter inside the cover? Laundry expert Tom Ceconi says once or twice a year is sufficient—but you’ll traditionally need to use a commercial front loader machine from the laundromat to accommodate the size.

How to Wash a Duvet Cover, Step-by-Step

When preparing to wash your duvet cover, our experts stress the importance of separating the cover from the comforter or duvet inside before cleaning.

“By separating them, not only can the duvet cover be agitated and rinsed completely, but they also have different care requirements,” Schrader explains. “Washing together can mean that the insert does not wash equally well, and it can stress the fabric.”

Materials Needed:

  • Mild detergent
  • Washing machine and dryer
  • Mesh bags
  • Wool dryer balls
  • Enzyme stain remover (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Read your duvet cover’s care instructions before beginning the washing process. (Care can vary widely between fabric types.)
  2. Identify any stains and pre-soak them in an enzyme stain remover.
  3. If your duvet cover has buttons or zippers, Ceconi recommends fastening the closures before laundering to prevent tangling.
  4. Add your duvet cover to an XL mesh bag to protect it from snagging. If you have matching shams, Ceconi recommends washing them in the same load to maintain color consistency and even wear.
  5. Choose a mild detergent free from harsh chemicals. Ceconi likes using pH-neutral detergent, which helps protect the integrity of finer fabrics.
  6. Launder on a gentle cycle in lukewarm water (or cold if directions recommend). Skip the bleach and fabric softener.
  7. Shake out your duvet cover after the wash cycle ends to minimize wrinkles.
  8. Dry your duvet cover on low heat with a set of wool dryer balls to promote even drying. If your duvet cover can't be machine dried (e.g., it's made of silk or another fine fabric), Ceconi advises hanging it to dry indoors and away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Common Duvet Cover Care Mistakes

Both Schrader and Ceconi say it’s common for snafus to happen when washing a duvet cover. Here are some of the top mistakes to avoid if you want to properly care for this common bedding essential.

  • Not consulting the care tag before cleaning—you don't want to accidentally launder something that isn't machine washable.
  • Not washing your duvet cover (and shams, if applicable) in a dedicated load. Larger duvet covers need space to be cleaned properly, and you don't want it to snag on other items.
  • Trying to quickly dry your duvet cover by upping the heat. Higher heat settings can damage your duvet cover.
  • Not securing the zippers, ties, or buttons on your duvet cover before washing—these can get tangled or snag.
