Transforming your bedroom into a sanctuary is an art—and the right layout creates the perfect canvas. Between bulky furniture—like the bed and the ottoman—to smaller pieces, like rugs and nightstands, there are plenty of different configurations to play around with.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Whether you have a sprawling primary suite or a petite apartment bedroom, it’s important to find the right approach for your space—and lifestyle. Luckily, all it takes is some creativity. Here, designers share bedroom layouts that will help you create the ultimate sleep haven.

Create a Cozy Nook

While beds are often centered, angling one or placing it against a side wall can free up space for a reading nook or desk in the opposite corner.

"[This] works beautifully in smaller or irregularly shaped rooms and adds a sense of intimacy," says Cayley Scrooby of Sovereign Interiors. "Anchor the bed with a rug underneath—at least two-thirds of the bed length—to define the zone, making the corner placement feel intentional, rather than squeezed."

Face the Bed Toward a View

If your room has an impressive view, why not wake up to it each morning?

"I'm a fan of taking a nontraditional approach and facing the bed towards a large window that overlooks the view," says Alex Thies, owner and creative director of Adelyn Charles Interiors. "There's nothing quite like waking up and seeing the ocean, mountains, or a beautiful garden in front of you."

Anchor the Foot of the Bed With Seating

If your bedroom is deeper than it is wide, you can always place seating at the foot of the bed rather than in a corner. Thies recommends two oversized swivels or cozy chairs and an ottoman.

"This creates an intimate space for you and your partner to catch up after a long day, enjoy a cup of coffee together, or even watch your favorite show without having to be in bed," she says.

Create Hotel-Style Symmetry

Some layouts are popular for a reason. Case in point? A bed centered on the main wall, bookended with two nightstands and lamps on either side. "This creates balance and calm—a classic hotel-style layout that feels organized and polished," says Scrooby.

Go Oversized

For large bedrooms, make sure your furniture doesn't drown in the space.

"I like to position the bed in the center of the room with oversized nightstands flanking each side, and a generously scaled area rug floating underneath," says interior designer Beth Diana Smith. "This arrangement creates a sense of symmetry and grandeur."

Incorporate Seating and Storage

Regardless of room size, Smith always tries to incorporate dresser storage and a designated seating area, "whether it’s a stool, bench, lounge chair, or a settee or sofa," she says.

"Allow for at least 30 inches—ideally 36 inches—between the bed and the front of a dresser to maintain comfortable circulation and avoid a cramped layout," Smith adds.

Follow Feng Shui

Feng shui—the ancient Chinese practice of establishing harmony between a person and their environment—encourages the commanding position of a bed.

"The bed should be positioned so you can see the doorway but not be directly in line with it—a principle that adds a sense of safety," says Scrooby.

Set Up a Statement Feature

A statement feature can act as an anchor for your bed—whether you set it against a wall with an upholstered headboard, panelling, or bold wallpaper. "[It] makes the bed the star of the room and sets a luxe, designed feel," Scrooby says.

Her note of caution? "Avoid placing the bed directly under a window if possible—it can feel unsettled," she says. "Instead, use the window wall for a seating area or dresser, letting natural light complement the space."

Designate a Lounge Area

As an alternative—or in addition—to end-of-the-bed seating, designate a corner of the bedroom for larger pieces like a chaise, an oversized chair, or even a recliner.

"This becomes the perfect spot to read a book, sit and put your shoes on, or meditate in the privacy of your own bedroom," Thies says.

Opt for an Oversized Rug

Rugs are an easy way to cozy up a bedroom and prevent your furnishings from feeling scattered. "My go-to for a king-sized bed is a 9 by 12 feet, in lieu of the traditional 8 by 10 [feet]," Thies says. "This creates a soft place to land getting out of bed, and really anchors the rest of your furniture in a way that feels balanced and elevated."

Don't Neglect the Nightstands

When it comes to nightstands, it's important to mind the gap. "[They] should be placed a few inches away from the bed itself, not pressed right up against it, or so far that you can't reach," Thies says.

They should also be sized accordingly to the height of your mattress. "If you have a standard boxspring and mattress, look for nightstands that are around 30 inches high instead of a lower profile piece," she says. "This will make your room feel more balanced and proportional."
